How to build a BOM for Arista switches

An Arista quote goes wrong in predictable places: the order build (-F, -R or #), the airflow on every fan and power supply, the optic cage on each model, the high-line power the bigger supplies need, and an EOS licence class that changes inside a family. This checklist walks the BOM in order and flags what our catalog shows buyers miss.

Covers the 7 Arista families in the SKUit catalog. Part numbers and options below are read from the catalog when the page is served.

The BOM, step by step

What to decide at each stage, and why it matters on the order

  1. Pick the model, then its order build

Each fixed Arista model is ordered as a build: -F (front-to-rear air, two AC supplies), -R (rear-to-front air, two AC supplies) or # (you add the fans and supplies yourself). Some models are sold front-to-rear only. The model also fixes the EOS licence class, so settle it before anything else.

  2. Modular 7388X5: choose the bundle

The 7388X5 is a 4RU chassis with eight module slots, four power-supply slots and five fan slots. The bundles in our catalog arrive with every module slot filled, so the bundle you pick decides the port mix, and MACsec depends on the module type.

  3. Optics and cables: match the cage first

Cages differ between models that look alike: SFP25 and QSFP100 on the 7050X3, QSFP-DD on the 7060DX5, OSFP on the 7060PX5-64E and every 7060X6. Pick optics by cage, reach and fibre, then plan breakouts. Breakout limits vary by model, even inside one family. Budget an optic or a cable end at both ends of every link.

  4. Power supplies: wattage and feed voltage

Fixed models take two supplies in a 1+1 pair. Wattage follows the model (the 2RU 7050SX3-96YC8 takes a 1000 W supply where its 1RU siblings take 500 W). The 1500 W and 2400 W AC supplies on the 7060X5 platforms need a 200–240 V feed.

  5. Fans and airflow: one direction per switch

Arista defines front-to-rear as air flowing from the port side to the fan side, so -F suits ports facing the cold aisle. Every fan and supply in the switch must match the chassis direction. Arista spells the direction two ways, -F/-R and -RED/-BLUE, and one switch can carry both: a -RED supply beside a -F fan is a matched pair.

  6. Licences: one routing tier, add-ons only if needed

EOS feature licences are separate, perpetual, per-device lines named LIC-FIX-<class>-<feature>. Order the class the model's data sheet names. Pick one routing tier (Enhanced L3, FLX-Lite or FLX) and add the EOS Extensions or Monitoring & Automation licences only if you use those features.

  7. Power cords and rack hardware

Plan a cord per supply, matched to its inlet, which varies by supply rather than by wattage: the AC versions of PWR-500, PWR-511, PWR-1011, PWR-1511/1512 and PWR-2011 have C14 inlets and PWR-2411-AC has a C20, while PWR-2421-HV uses a SAF-D inlet, PWR-2411-MC a 6-pin connector, and the DC supplies take lugs. Our catalog does not yet hold Arista power cords as orderable lines, so confirm cords and the rack kit for your rack depth with your Arista partner.

  8. Support

The 7050X3, 7060X5 and 7060X6 data sheets give a one-year limited hardware warranty with a ten-business-day turnaround. Next-business-day or four-hour replacement is a separate support contract, so add one if the switch is in production.

Gotchas and best practice from our catalog

Each one is scoped to the families it is true for, with the part numbers that prove it

  • Gotcha

Match airflow on every 7050X3 fan and PSU, whatever the spelling

In the 7050X3 family Arista writes airflow two ways, and both can sit in one switch. Chassis builds, the PWR-500 supplies and many fans use -F (front-to-rear) and -R (rear-to-front). The PWR-511 and PWR-1011 supplies, and the 2RU 7050SX3-96YC8's FAN-7012M fans, use -RED (forward, front-to-rear) and -BLUE (reverse, rear-to-front). So a -RED supply beside a -F fan is correct. Front-to-rear means air enters at the port side, and every fan and supply must point the same way as the chassis.

The 2RU 7050SX3-96YC8 takes its own 1000 W PSU and fans

The 96 x 25G model is the only 2RU switch in the 7050X3 family. It takes the 1000 W PWR-1011 supplies and FAN-7012M fans, not the 500 W supplies and 1RU fans its siblings use. Quoting it with the 1RU parts is an easy copy-paste error.

  • Best practice

Keep 10G and 25G servers on separate SFP quads

On the 7050SX3-48YC12 and 7050SX3-96YC8 the high-density SFP ports are configured in groups of four, either all at 25G or as a mix of 10G and 1G. A 10G and a 25G server cannot share a quad, so allocate ports, and cabling, per group of four.

  • Gotcha

Order the 7050X3 licence class of the model, not the family

The EOS licence class is set per model and changes inside the 7050X3 family. The 7050SX3-48C8, 7050SX3-48C8C and 7050SX3-24YC4C are Group 1 (LIC-FIX-1-…). The other 7050X3 models are Group 2 (LIC-FIX-2-…). Check the class against the exact model before you quote the licence line.

Check a model is sold rear-to-front before you plan the rack

Several models have no -R build: the 7050SX3-48YC12, the 7060X5 800G models, every 7060X6, and the 7280DR3-24. Their spare fans and supplies come in forward (front-to-rear) form only. If your design needs the ports facing the hot aisle, choose a different model rather than mixing directions.

7060DX5-64S rear-to-front works only with 400G DACs and AOCs

The 64 x 400G 2RU 7060DX5-64S is sold in a -R build, but Arista footnotes that the rear-to-front configuration is only supported with 400G DACs and AOCs. If the switch needs pluggable optics, order the -F build.

  • Gotcha

Check OSFP versus QSFP-DD before choosing 400G and 800G optics

Models that look alike take different optics. The DCS-7060DX5-64E has 32 x 800G QSFP-DD ports and the DCS-7060PX5-64E has 32 x 800G OSFP, so a QDD-800G-2FR4 will not seat in the PX5, which takes OSFP-800G-2FR4. In the 7280R3 family the 7280CR3-32P4's four 400G uplinks are OSFP and the 7280CR3-32D4's are QSFP-DD.

    Plan 200–240 V feeds for the 1500 W and 2400 W AC supplies

On the 7060X5 platforms the 1500 W and 2400 W AC supplies (PWR-1511-AC, PWR-1512-AC, PWR-2411-AC) take 200–240 V AC only. A 110/120 V feed will not power them, so check the rack's PDUs before you quote these switches.

For DC power, order the # build and add DC supplies and fans

The pre-built -F and -R codes ship with two AC supplies, and there is no pre-built DC code for these models. For a DC site, order the # build, then add two DC supplies such as PWR-1511-DC-RED (7060DX5) or PWR-511-DC-RED (7280R3) and fans in the matching airflow.

Common questions

Short answers about Arista switch BOMs

Do Arista switches ship with power supplies and fans?

The usual -F (front-to-rear) and -R (rear-to-front) order codes on fixed models ship with two AC power supplies. The # build ships without supplies or fans on the 7060X5 and 7060X6 and as a configurable build on the 7050X3 and 7280R3, so you add them yourself. Most models have no pre-built DC code, so # is also how you order DC power.

How do I choose front-to-back or back-to-front airflow on an Arista switch?

Arista defines front-to-rear as air flowing from the port side to the fan side, so choose -F (or -RED parts) when the ports face the cold aisle, and -R (or -BLUE) when the fan and supply side does. Every fan and supply must match the chassis. Several models, including every 7060X6 and the 800G 7060X5 models, are sold front-to-rear only.

What licences does an Arista switch need?

Advanced EOS features need perpetual, per-device licences named LIC-FIX-<class>-<feature>, where the class depends on the exact model. Pick one routing tier (Enhanced L3, FLX-Lite or FLX) and add the EOS Extensions or Monitoring & Automation licences only if you need those features.

Which optics fit my Arista switch?

Match the cage type first: SFP25 and QSFP100 on the 7050X3, QSFP-DD on the 7060DX5, and OSFP on the 7060PX5-64E and every 7060X6. The 7280CR3-32P4 and 7280CR3-32D4 differ only in their four 400G uplinks, OSFP against QSFP-DD. Then choose by reach and fibre, and check the model's breakout limits.

Which Arista power supplies need a 200–240 V feed?

The 1500 W and 2400 W AC supplies (PWR-1511-AC, PWR-1512-AC, PWR-2411-AC) take 200–240 V AC only, on the 7060X5 platforms and the 7280R3 alike, and PWR-2421-HV (7060X6-64PE, 7388X5) needs 200–277 V AC or 240–380 V DC, so a 110/120 V feed will power none of them. Check each supply's input range rather than going by port speed: the 500 W and 1000 W supplies on the 7050X3 accept 100–240 V.
