How to build a BOM for Juniper switches
Our Juniper coverage is the QFX5120 and QFX5130 data-centre switches, and their BOMs trip people up in a particular way: airflow is spelled into the part numbers in several ways, whether supplies and fans come in the box depends on the order code, and the Flex licence class is set per model. This checklist walks a QFX BOM in order.
Covers the 2 Juniper Networks families in the SKUit catalog. Part numbers and options below are read from the catalog when the page is served.
The BOM, step by step
What to decide at each stage, and why it matters on the order
Choose the model, then its airflow-spelled part number
The QFX5120 comes as the -48Y (48 x 25G SFP28 plus 8 x 100G QSFP28), the -48YM (the same ports with MACsec), the -48T (48 x 10GBASE-T copper plus 6 x 100G) and the -32C (32 x 100G). The airflow and AC/DC build is part of the chassis part number. Our catalog lists the QFX5130 by model rather than by orderable build, so confirm the exact QFX5130 code with your Juniper partner.
Optics and cables, per port group
On the -48Y and -48YM the access cages take SFP28, SFP+ or SFP (25, 10 or 1G) and the uplinks are QSFP28. The -48T's access ports are RJ45 copper and need no optics. QFX5130 ports are QSFP-DD at 400G, and the QFX5130-48C's access ports are SFP56-DD, a different optic family from QSFP28. Budget an optic for both ends of every link.
Power supplies: AC or DC, and whether to order them
Every QFX5120 and QFX5130 model has two supply bays. Juniper's QFX5130 -AFO/-AFI and -D-AFO/-D-AFI builds include two supplies, AC or DC to match the build, while the -CHAS chassis-only codes ship without supplies or fans. For the QFX5120 our catalog records two supplies as included, but we hold no Juniper document that says so, so confirm with your partner before leaving supplies off the order. Wattage follows the model: 650 W on the QFX5120-48Y and -48T, and 1,600 W on the QFX5130.
Fans and airflow
Juniper's QFX5130 builds include redundant fans (the -CHAS chassis-only codes do not), and our catalog records the QFX5120 fans as included too (five on the -48Y, -48YM and -48T, six on the -32C). The decision is direction: AFO (front-to-back, air enters at the ports) or AFI (back-to-front, air leaves at the ports). Chassis, supplies and any spare fans must all agree.
Licences: the Flex class for your model
Juniper Flex software is ordered separately from the switch, and the class is set per model: the QFX5120-48Y, -48YM and -48T are Class 1 (S-QFX5K-C1-…), the QFX5120-32C is Class 2 (-C2-), and the QFX5130 is Class 3 (-C3-). Choose the tier and the term: our catalog holds 3- and 5-year subscriptions and perpetual licences for the Flex tiers, and Juniper also defines a 1-year term. MACsec on the QFX5120-48YM is a separate licence, sold as a 1-, 3- or 5-year subscription or perpetual.
Rack kit
A default 4-post rack kit ships with each QFX5120. Order a separate kit only for a 2-post or other non-standard rack.
Power cords and support
Our catalog holds no Juniper power cords or support part numbers. Specify a cord per supply for your PDUs, and add the support contract through your Juniper partner.
Gotchas and best practice from our catalog
Each one is scoped to the families it is true for, with the part numbers that prove it
- Gotcha
Read AFO and AFI by where the air enters
Juniper's letters describe the airflow, not the cold aisle. AFO (airflow out) is front-to-back: air enters at the ports and leaves at the supply and fan side. AFI (airflow in) is back-to-front: air leaves at the ports. Don't map them from another vendor's front and rear letters.

Don't expect one airflow suffix spelling across the QFX5120
Juniper uses several spellings inside one family. The -48Y is -AFO2/-AFI2, the -48T is -AFO/-AFI, and the -48YM DC builds are -DC-AO/-DC-AI. The 650 W AC supplies are -AC-AO/-AC-AI while the 650 W DC supplies are -DC-AFO/-DC-AFI. Match on direction, not on text.

Keep chassis, supply and fan airflow in the same direction
The supplies and spare fans carry their own airflow. A QFX5120-48Y-AFO2 takes front-to-back supplies such as JPSU-650W-AC-AO and front-to-back spare fans such as QFX5110-FANAFO. Mixing directions sends hot exhaust back into the intake.

Check whether the QFX5130 code includes supplies and fans
Juniper's QFX5130 -AFO/-AFI and -D-AFO/-D-AFI builds include redundant fans and two power supplies, AC or DC to match the build, so separately listed supplies and fans are spares for those builds. The -CHAS chassis codes ship without supplies or fans: if you order one, add two supplies and the fans yourself.

For MACsec, buy the QFX5120-48YM and a MACsec licence
Among the QFX5120 models only the -48YM carries MACsec AES-256 hardware, and the capability is licensed separately on top of the Flex tier: a 1-, 3- or 5-year subscription (S-QFX5KC1-MACSEC-1, -3, -5), or a perpetual licence, which our catalog does not hold yet.

Order no access optics for the QFX5120-48T, and count 6 uplinks
The QFX5120-48T's 48 access ports are 10GBASE-T RJ45 copper, so they need cabling rather than SFPs. It has six QSFP28 uplinks, not the eight on the -48Y and -48YM.

Order the Flex licence class of the model; the tier names differ
The QFX licences share the S-QFX5K stem but the class is set per model: Class 1 (-C1-) for the QFX5120-48Y, -48YM and -48T, Class 2 (-C2-) for the QFX5120-32C, and Class 3 (-C3-) for the QFX5130. The same code also reads differently: on the QFX5120 A1, A2 and P1 are Advanced 1, Advanced 2 and Premium 1, while on the QFX5130 they are Base L3, Advanced and Premium. Quote the part number, not the tier name.

A real bill of materials from the SKUit BOM engine, with the lines buyers most often leave off
A 25G server leaf for an EVPN-VXLAN fabric: 48 server ports on multimode fibre, four 100G uplinks, AC power, front-to-back airflow (AFO), standard 4-post rack. There is no rack-kit line because the default 4-post kit ships in the box. QFX5120-48Y is in the Juniper QFX5120 family.
| Qty | Part number | Item | Why it is on the BOM |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | QFX5120-48Y-AFO2 | Switch | On the QFX5120 the airflow and AC/DC build is part of the chassis part number, and the -48Y alone spells it -AFO2, so a bare QFX5120-48Y is not a complete order line. |
| 2 | JPSU-650W-AC-AO | Power Supply | Listed so the airflow is visible: the engine records two as installed with the -AFO2 build (confirm with your partner). AO matches AFO, air entering at the ports. |
| 48 | JNP-SFP-25G-SR | Transceiver | |
| 4 | JNP-QSFP-100G-BXSR | Transceiver | Uplink optics are their own line, on a different form factor (QSFP28) from the access optics. |
| 1 | S-QFX5K-C1-A2-P | License | Flex software is ordered separately, so a hardware-only quote has no licence line. Class 1 is the -48Y's class, and Advanced 2 is the tier this EVPN-VXLAN leaf was built with. |

Common questions
Short answers about Juniper Networks switch BOMs
What do AFO and AFI mean on Juniper part numbers?
AFO (airflow out) is front-to-back: cool air enters at the port side and leaves at the supply and fan side. AFI (airflow in) is back-to-front, with air leaving at the ports. On the QFX5120 the letters appear on the chassis, supply and fan part numbers, spelled several ways (-AFO2, -AFO, -AO), so read the direction, not the exact text.
Do Juniper QFX switches ship with power supplies and fans?
It depends on the order code. Juniper's QFX5130 -AFO/-AFI and -D-AFO/-D-AFI builds include two power supplies (AC or DC to match the build) and redundant fans, while the -CHAS chassis-only codes ship with neither. For the QFX5120 our catalog records two supplies and the fans as included, but we hold no Juniper document that says so; confirm with your partner before leaving them off the order.
What licence does a QFX5120 need?
Juniper Flex software is ordered separately from the switch, and the class follows the model: Class 1 for the QFX5120-48Y, -48YM and -48T, Class 2 for the QFX5120-32C. Our catalog holds Advanced 1, Advanced 2 and Premium 1 licences as 3- or 5-year subscriptions, plus perpetual versions in both classes. MACsec on the -48YM is a separate licence, sold as a 1-, 3- or 5-year subscription or perpetual.
How is QFX5130 licensing different from the QFX5120?
The QFX5130 uses Class 3 Flex licences (S-QFX5K-C3-…) in three tiers, Base L3, Advanced and Premium, each as a 3- or 5-year subscription or perpetual. QFX5120 Class 1 and Class 2 licences do not apply to it.
